Nigerian Youth Minister, Olawande welcomes CYMS’s DG Chief Obinna Nwaka appointment as Focal Person on Youth Exchange program.

Nigeria’s Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has welcomed the appointment of Chief Obinna Nwaka as Nigeria’s Focal Person for the Nigeria–South Africa Exchange Fellowship Programme, describing it as a step toward strengthening youth engagement and regional cooperation.

The appointment was announced by the foremost South Africa organization called Universal Greening Organisation (UGO), which named Chief Nwaka to coordinate Nigeria’s participation in the initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between young leaders in Nigeria and South Africa. The decision, which took effect on April 1, 2026, was communicated in an official letter signed by Omolemo Somolekae, the Director, International Relations.

UGO said the appointment reflects Nwaka’s extensive experience in youth mobilization and leadership development. He currently serves as Director-General of the Committee of Youth on Mobilization and Sensitization (CYMS), where he has spearheaded programmes promoting youth participation in governance, national development, international engagement and Empowerment.

The Nigeria–South Africa Exchange Fellowship Programme is designed to deepen bilateral ties while equipping participants with skills in climate action, sustainable development, and regional cooperation. It will bring together emerging leaders from both countries for exchange visits, joint projects, and policy engagement.

In his new role, Chief Nwaka will lead the Nigerian delegation to South Africa and also serve as the primary liaison between UGO and Nigerian institutions, overseeing programme implementation, coordinating the selection of participants, and building partnerships aligned with national priorities.

UGO emphasized that the position is honorary and does not constitute formal employment, but represents a strategic collaboration to advance youth empowerment and Pan-African development goals.

Reacting to the development, Minister Olawande expressed confidence that the appointment would enhance Nigeria’s contribution to the programme and provide a platform for young Nigerians to engage meaningfully on the continental stage.

The organization also noted that preparations are underway for the 2026 edition of the fellowship and has requested formal acceptance from Chief Nwaka as activities intensify.
