Minister of Youth Development Advocates for Youth Empowerment and Peace Building at Traditional Youth Chiefs’ Retreat in Nasarawa

The Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Engr. Ayodele Olawande (Matawallen Matasan Nigeria), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to youth empowerment, inclusive governance, and community development during a keynote address at a two-day retreat organized by the Traditional Youth Chiefs’ Forum of Nigeria.

The event, held on April 29 and 30 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, was themed “The Role of Traditional Youth Chiefs in Peace Building and Community Development.” It brought together youth leaders, traditional institutions, policymakers, and civil society representatives to strategize on strengthening grassroots leadership and youth participation in nation-building.

In his speech, delivered by Chief Obinna Nwaka, Director General of the Committee of Youth on Mobilization and Sensitization (CYMS), the Honourable Minister praised the efforts of the Traditional Youth Chiefs’ Forum and its Chairman, Hon. Barr. Aliyu Yusuf Shehu, for championing youth inclusion and traditional leadership.

“Youth are not just leaders of tomorrow but are also drivers of change today,” Olawande stated. “As Traditional Youth Chiefs, you are the bridge between heritage and innovation. Your leadership is essential in promoting peace, guiding development, and amplifying the voices of young people.”

The Minister emphasized the significance of peace building as a dynamic process rooted in justice, dialogue, and inclusion. He also highlighted the role of youth chiefs in spearheading community development through education, vocational training, entrepreneurship, and mentorship.

He urged participants to embrace inclusive governance by ensuring marginalized voices are heard and respected, and to instill patriotic values within their communities, promoting a positive image of Nigeria at all levels.

Speaking on the Federal Government’s commitment to youth advancement, Olawande highlighted key initiatives under the Renewed Hope administration, including the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA), Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF), the Pi-CNG Initiative, ongoing NYSC reforms, and the forthcoming Youth Confab.

“These programs are designed to empower our youth with skills, capital, and platforms to thrive and become self-reliant,” he said.

The retreat also featured the conferment of a traditional title on Engr. Olawande — Matawallen Matasan Nigeria (Guardian of Nigeria Youth) — in recognition of his dedication to youth development nationwide.

As the retreat continues, stakeholders are expected to generate actionable strategies that will strengthen collaboration between traditional institutions and government in building peaceful and progressive communities.

“This gathering must be a launchpad for partnerships and policies that uplift every Nigerian youth,” Olawande concluded.
