Minister of Youth Development Highlights the Power of Youth and Technology at Abuja Tech Converge 2024

Engr. Ayodele Olawande, the Honorable Minister of Youth Development, delivered an inspiring keynote address at the 2024 Abuja Tech Converge (ATC), emphasizing the transformative role of youth and technology in shaping Africa’s future. The event, organized by ThriveAgric, brought together leading innovators, entrepreneurs, and industry experts under the theme, “TechNext Africa: Innovating for a Sustainable Future.”

Represented by Chief Obinna Nwaka, the Minister highlighted the crucial role young people play in Africa’s technological evolution. He praised ThriveAgric for its innovative approach to improving agricultural productivity and empowering communities across the continent.

“This year’s theme is particularly relevant,” Olawande stated. “Africa stands on the brink of a technological revolution, presenting both tremendous opportunities and formidable challenges.” He stressed the importance of harnessing innovation to tackle pressing issues like climate change, resource management, and education. According to Olawande, technology offers powerful solutions to these challenges.

The Minister also spotlighted the success of the Tech-Talent Accelerated Program (TAP), a key initiative that equips young Africans with the digital skills necessary for success in the global economy. In 2023, half of the program’s participants were women, and nearly all found employment or entrepreneurial opportunities. Olawande noted that the current TAP cohort is already working on pioneering projects addressing some of Africa’s most urgent needs.

He emphasized the need to empower youth to take the lead in emerging fields such as artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and green technologies. These technologies, he explained, are crucial for sustainable development, ranging from precision agriculture to renewable energy and waste management solutions.

While acknowledging the transformative potential of these technologies, Olawande underscored the importance of the right policies, frameworks, and educational initiatives to ensure that innovation is both inclusive and sustainable. “It is vital that no community is left behind in the digital revolution, and that innovation focuses on creating ethical, inclusive, and sustainable solutions,” he stated.

In his concluding remarks, Olawande reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young people with the tools, knowledge, and mentorship needed to succeed. He hoped that the discussions and collaborations fostered at the 2024 Abuja Tech Converge would propel Africa toward a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The event, attended by key players from the tech and innovation sectors, marked a significant step in Africa’s journey to leverage technology for economic growth and sustainable development. Olawande’s address left a strong impact on attendees, reinforcing the pivotal role of youth and innovation in driving Africa’s progress.

The 2024 Abuja Tech Converge concluded on a high note, with participants energized and motivated to continue pushing the boundaries of technological innovation for a brighter, more tech-driven future for Africa.
